As we headed into the 2024-5 League One campaign, it was clear we were determined to make sure we weren’t making up the numbers. The league was certainly shaping up to be a competitive one; big name clubs like Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers were looking to assert themselves. At the same time, smaller clubs like Burton Albion got a shot in the financial arm. So, we had our work cut out. And the man leading it all for the second time in a fledgling managerial career was Alex Revell; handed the reins after the departure of Steve Evans late in the 2023-4 season.
By the end of the season, we had no vested interest in the battles either for promotion or relegation. In fact, we spent a good couple of months (it seemed) tootling towards the finishing line; safe in the knowledge we’d be in League One yet again in 2025-6. Notable highlights included two wins over Wrexham, who finished in the top two. There was little for us to shout about in cup competitions, however. And it’s fair to say that scoring was not our thing. While we weren’t lowest scorers in the division, our Goals For tally was rather muted. At the same time, our defensive record was decent.
