You could argue that John McGregor became our first-ever international signing – courtesy of his Scottish league experience. The midfielder arrived in 1980 after spells at Clyde and Stenhousemuir north of the border. But we’d only get one season out of him; the player last seen in action for Boro’ against Ford Sports in April 1981.
