Yet to meet in a proper competitive fixture yet, we’ve only come across Potters Bar Town in friendlies or county cup competition. To be fair, there are a few sides in Hertfordshire who we still haven’t met in anger. That’s not our fault – neither is it theirs. It’s just the way the footballing cookie crumbles.

Formed in 1960, Potters Bar Town started life as Mount Grace Old Scholars. This goes a long way to explaining why their nickname is The Scholars, not The Potters as we’d been hoping and possibly also expecting. The first years were spent at district level, claiming the North London Combination Premier Division title in 1968. From that summer on, however, it was onto county competition and the Herts County League Division Two.
The Scholars won the Division Two title at the first time of asking and went up to Division One. It took another five years before they reached the Premier Division. But for three campaigns in-between 1979 and 1982 when they were back in Division One, they’d had found their level. In 1984, the Old Scholars bit was lopped off their name. And, in 1991, so was Mount Grace. They only avoided being nameless by going with Potters Bar Town.
The name change came at a time of heady heights for the Scholars; winning the Herts County League title and reaching the FA Vase Third Round. So, they took it up a step and moved to the South Midlands League Premier Division. After being crowned champions on goal difference in 1997, they were founder members of Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division North the following season and came second. Their ascent continued.

This ain’t the longest of journeys – but then again you will have known that already. Go south on the A1 and join the clockwise M25. It’ll only be for one junction, however. You you come off the M25 at Junction 24 for the A111 into Potters Bar. Take the first exit at the roundabout; heading up the A111 for half a mile before turning right into the A1000 High Street. You’ll find the ground up on the left after around 0.2 miles.

If you turn left into The Walk as you come up the High Street, you’ll find a car park on the right up Watkins Rise that could have spaces. If not, street parking might be available.

Come out of the station onto Darkes Lane, which is the road that goes under the railway. Cross over and go down The Walk. A McDonald’s is by this junction, should you be in any need of a waymarker. After about half a mile, you’ll arrive at the ground.
