The One Where You Shrews, You Lose

By BoroGuide

Vic ReevesYou Shrews, you lose… geddit? Ah please yourself then. We never said we were good at the punning game, same as we aren’t much cop at predicting how Boro’ are going to fare. We’d been sure EEMPT (DWAH)’s Gillingham side were there for the taking on Tuesday, but we somehow came away with nothing. Football may well be a funny old game, but it can be an utter pain in the proverbial as well sometimes.

We return to the Lamex this weekend for the first time since the Rotherham disaster and it is our good fortune to welcome the lads and lasses of Shrewsbury Town. Now, be prepared – our record against Shrewsbury is poor. In fact, it’s not just poor – it’s downright filthy. It’s the seventh time we’ve come up against them lot and we’ve not got the better of them since the first time we played ’em back in 2003.

That said, the Shropshire side have never won at our gaff – if that counts for anything? And we’ve only failed to score against them once. Hmm, maybe it’s not so bad after all. The lads at Opta say we’ve scored 61% of our goals this season in the first half; no other League One side comes close. And we needn’t panic if we go behind; Shrews don’t like holding a lead as it goes, losing 16 points from favourable positions this year.

Team-wise, we’re going to miss the presence of Peter Hartley at the back… and it sounds as if GW might make a few more changes too. What do we reckon? Roarie and Jimmy back in defence? Or does David Gray feature for you? Bruno on the left for Luke? Burrow for Filipe up top? Oh, the possibilities. Either way, we’re backing whichever 11 is picked by GW to do the business and send the Shrews packing. You heard it here first

Carl Berry – It seems from our brief observations that we don’t have much of a history with this particular referee. He has taken charge of three Boro’ games since November 2011 and the good news is that we haven’t lost any of them. Mind you, he was the man who awarded Brentford two pelanties at the Lamex in April 2012. They were both missed and we took all three points in that particular game.

This season for Carl Berry:
Games: 3 — Yellow: 15 (5pg), Red: 0

Our record under Carl Berry:
P3 W2 D1 L0 F3 A1 — Yellow: 5, Red: 0[/expand]

Boro’ Line-Up:
Day; Smith, Ashton, Jones, Deacon; Akins, Doughty, Heslop, Andrade; Burrow, Zoko

We expect GW to make some changes this weekend and therefore we made some of our own. It seems only fair, right? Anyway, we digress – this one turned out to be far simpler than we had imagined. We expected some form of resistance from our visitors, but we’re fools for thinking so. And it all started when Boro’ went ahead after 14′ through Francois Zoko, who slotted home after Jordan Burrow hit the post.

Zoko went on to get a hattrick in this game; the latter two goals coming from crosses that found their man! On both occasions, Francois had the freedom of the penalty area to find the net as our visitors decided defending wasn’t their bag. Oumare Tounkara came off the bench to add a fourth late on – funnily enough, a headed goal from a Zoko cross – to really rub the Shrews’ nose in it. FT: Stevenage 4-0 Shrewsbury. If only.
