It’s clearly not the most exciting position to be in, but Stevenage are comfortably in the no man’s land of mid-table as the season comes to a close. We couldn’t maintain a bright start to the season, with most Boro’ fans now wondering what exactly it is they need to compete with the top clubs in the division: the League 2 Playoff contenders.
Still, with five games remaining, Boro’ could have a big impact on the way the season pans out for other teams. The remaining fixture list sees Stevenage take on four clubs from the top eight, all of whom are either in the automatic promotion race, playoff race or both. Below is a look at how the Stevenage games could impact the League 2 Playoff race:
Mansfield Town (H) – 10 April
A very quick note on this, because you are reading this after the game! Mansfield are just outside the playoff places in eighth position. They are 8/1 to win the playoffs but have been very poor form of late, not winning a game since 17 February 17. If nothing else, this could be a winnable fixture for Stevenage to continue their decent recent form.
Cambridge United (H) – 14 April
Stevenage’s only game remaining against a club not currently in the top eight. Cambridge find themselves in 14th position. If there is a winner here however, they could make a good fist of finishing in the top half of the table. It’s 14/1 (Bet Victor, Sky Bet) for Stevenage to finish 11th or better. Coventry City (A) – 20 April
It must be very frustrating to be a Coventry fan: You win 4-0 at home to Grimsby; less than 10 days later, you are shipping six goals at home to Yeovil. They are just inside the playoff positions at the moment, with odds 4/1 to win them. In-form Lincoln might be a better bet at 5/2. The reverse fixture in November finished 1-1 in what was a lively game; Tom Pett salvaging a point late on for Boro’. You could see a similar scoreline occurring here.
Exeter City (H) – 28 April
The penultimate game of the season for Stevenage and the first in a double-header against automatic promotion contenders. Exeter are currently in 4th place, two points behind Wycombe in the automatic promotion spots. They were League Two’s standout team in the early part of the season; going all the way to late September without tasting defeat. The 2-1 scoreline in Exeter’s win in December probably flattered Boro’ a bit. The result here could be huge in context of the promotion places.
Wycombe Wanderers (A) – 5 May
A big chance for Boro’ to play spoiler on the final day of the season, regardless of how the game against Exeter goes. Wycombe have also been very good in dispatching teams in the bottom half of the table at Adams Park. Wycombe (2/9) currently lead Exeter (13/8) in the odds for promotion. Will that gap of two points still be in place on the last day of the season? It might not be what all optimistic Boro’ fans wanted from their season. At least there is something of significance to be involved with right up until the last fixture, however.
