Oh, if only this was an FA Cup match – right? As we blaze a darn tootin’ trail through the best domestic football marketing platform competition in the world with our blistering five-goal-a-game average, we must go back to the humdrum of League Two this weekend. In contrast to our eye-catching cup exploits, this is a competition in which we boast a slightly less sexy half-a-goal-a-game average. That’s coming from the last six occasions where we’ve discharged our duties to our benevolent overlords at Football League HQ, at least. Still, Reading eh?
Next up in the Old Fourth Division is Wycombe Wanderers indoors. It’s a fixture that can be billed as the ‘Three Counties Derby’ and get stuck on a shiny poster if you’d like. It’s your pocket money. Luton might well kick up a broo-hah-hah, but they already have quite enough air time as it is. This is a perfect time to get our League Two form ironed out (As if there isn’t a perfect time?? Ed.) ‘cos we’re now but a mere hop, skip and a jump from that special time of year. Yes, that time when a Coca-Cola-branded lorry trundles through your village at speed.
‘Tis the mothercluckin’ season…
Stevenage v Wycombe Wanderers: The Lowdown
The Opposition:
The Chairboys come to us with passable ambitions of a playoff push in the New Year. Sat in fifth position as we preach forth, there won’t be any Christmas number one for them sadly. The top three, however, is well within striking distance this side of the big fireworks. To make that, it’ll likely mean a tip of the balance between them and us. In 10 meetings to this point, we’ve won four and so have they. We asked Rachel Riley what that means for the number of draws, and we await a reply with a rasping gurn. With 11 goals apiece too, it’s delicate innit?
The Form:
In the time since ‘The Event’ at Kenilworth Road, Boro’ have cobbled together just five points. We don’t dwell on such bad vibes normalement, but those points have all come at the expense of sides in the top six at home. Accrington (W), Notts County (D) and Coventry City (D) makes for a strange haul for a side bottom of the form table, but there we go. And Wycombe are in the top six. So, here we are. For what it’s worth, our guests aren’t exactly setting the world alight; 14th in said form table, though have two wins to show from their last three.
The Referee:
Scott Duncan. It’s been a while… and we’re not sure if that’s a good thing or not?
