Can Stevenage Cope Without Matty Godden?

Back in March 2017, Boro’s Matty Godden was the leading goalscorer for the calendar year ahead of the likes of Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero; the striker catching the eye of possible suitors during the summer transfer window. Charlton and Bristol Rovers were just two of the sides linked with a move for the 26-year-old. The frontman, however, opted to remain at the Lamex.

Whilst Godden hasn’t been quite as prolific since, he has continued scoring vital goals. This includes a hat-trick during the FA Cup success over non-league Nantwich at the start of November.

Stevenage narrowly missed out on promotion last season after their form took a dip in the final few weeks of the campaign. Yet, Matty Godden was a key part of their charge towards the top seven. Darren Sarll will be hoping his side can replicate their playoff push once again. After a winless run, Boro picked up a decent point against table-topping Notts County on 11 November and can still be found at 25/1 in Paddy Power’s football betting markets. There are signs that the club is moving in the right direction.

Matty Godden: Recent Form

The former Ebbsfleet hitman has scored five times so far this season in the league. He missed the club’s recent 3-0 defeat against Yeovil with a knock, though. Following his three-goal haul in the cup, Godden declared himself ‘fit and sharp’; music to the ears of Stevenage fans. And, yet, he could head off in January.

Charlton weren’t willing to match Boro’s £1.5 million valuation of the forward. Manager Karl Robinson still remains an admirer of the striker, which means the Addicks could return with a renewed bid once the January transfer window opens.

Stevenage have unearthed another non-league gem in the shape of Danny Newton and his presence is likely to soften the blow if Godden heads to The Valley. The former Tamworth striker has hit six in 16 and claimed two assists so far this season. That said, he didn’t find the net throughout October. Kyle Wootton has failed to impress during his loan spell from Scunthorpe, while Alex Samuel has found the net three times during the EFL Trophy. Samuel still may benefit from a run in the side.

Darren Sarll and his scouting network have developed the knack of spotting non-league talent and polishing them up to League Two standard. There is little doubt they could find yet more untapped potential further down the pyramid if Godden was to depart.

The striker may decide his immediate future remains in Hertfordshire as he aims to help his side with their promotion push. Few will begrudge him the opportunity, however, to chance his arm at a higher level. Stevenage aren’t short on firepower and they have plenty of talent in their squad. This isn’t the case for all sides in the division.

Godden has netted just five times in League Two this season and the goals are being shared around. This means Boro should be able to cope perfectly well. That’s if their star man departs the club when the January transfer window opens on New Year’s Day.
