… and then, right, we woke up on Sunday morning and found out it was all a bad dream. If we can get enough people to believe it, then we might just stand a chance of having the game scrubbed out of the record books. As things stand, however, it’s now there in black and white for all to see. Luton Town 7-1 Stevenage. We’re not often on the receiving end of a scoreline that needs the number laid bare in wordage for clarity. Of course it’s not. It’s only the fourth time in 2,057 games we done such a blunder. And that’s only 0.19% of all our doings.
So, what’s all the fuss about?
Now, we’re back indoors and – sometimes – it can be the safest place to be. Not, however, when you have the prospect of Accrington Stanley to deal with. A morale-boosting return to winning ways is what we are looking for, but the Lancashire side don’t want to be giving us that. Well, at least that’s what we think. After all, we’ve not actually asked them. Be that as it may, our guests are a place and a point behind Luton in the table. That’s almost like downgrading Hurricane Ophelia to ex-Hurricane Ophelia. It’s still worth an amber warning.
Stevenage v Accrington Stanley: The Lowdown
The Opposition:
Our last meeting with them is, of course, well worth forgetting. A year after wrecking their promotion hopes with a goalless draw that bumped them out of the top three on the last day, Stanley smashed our own hopes last term. In truth, we were already running on empty by that point. No-one likes a three-goal retort, however. It was also the first time since November 2010 that Boro’ had been on the wrong end of the scoreline against Accrington. Still, we’re yet to lose at home to them and that hopefully remains the case after this encounter.
The Form:
Form is temporary, class is permanent. And so are some marker pens. There is no direct link between the two statements; there is no real enduring lessons to be learned from our weekend stinker. To date this season, Stanley have lost three times in the league; the most recent of which was just two games ago at home to Luton. So, it’s obvious innit. Lose to Luton, win the next game. Lovely stuff. Suddenly we’re feeling a lot better about things…
