The Wycombe Man

Do sit down, folks. Shocks are so much better absorbed with the knees bent. And if we had something to shock you with, you’d be feeling the full benefit right about now. Sadly, we don’t – and that means this intro has all been a bit of an anti-climax, doesn’t it? So, let’s cut to the chase. It’s Wycombe Wanderers indoors this time and another chance for Stevenage Football Club to make it three league wins on the bounce. That hasn’t happened for some time. Not this season, that’s for sure. Or last, either. April 2015 is the last time, that we reckon.

Of course, the Chairboys hold an unwelcome distinction as far as we’re concerned. In beating us 1-0 over at their place earlier this term, it stopped Boro’ from recording a third straight league win. And that’s not all! We only went into that off the back of a 2-1 win over Crawley. So, here we are again – fresh from brushing off the Red Devils and gunning for three of three. It’s OK if you want to insert a witticism about “football being funny ol’game”. We shan’t be doing that, however, because we’re content to stick with a bog standard “fakinel!”…

Stevenage v Wycombe Wanderers: No shocks here...

Now, this could be an interesting one. As things stand, Wycombe Wanderers are testament to the value of a good run of results in this humble division of ours. With just one defeat from the last 10, Gareth Ainsworth’s men have propelled themselves up into the promotion hunt. And that single defeat came against League Two’s form team, Exeter City. So, we’re up against a side in good nick here – even if keeping a 3-2 lead against 10-men in the 89th minute was beyond them. Hmm. That might get us a few letters of complaint. Ho hum.

This is the 10th meeting between us and them. We’ve won three, while they’ve won four. The other two? You should be capable of working that out for yourself, surely. Our 2-1 win at the Lamex last season was the first time we’d got the better of them indoors – as so often is the case, thanks to an early strike from our keeper. If Jamie Jones hasn’t been practising his shooting at Bragbury End this week, what chance do we have of making it four wins against Wycombe? After all, who else is going to get the goals we’ll need? Matt Godden?

Yeah, we’d bloody like to see him try…

The Rowan Liburd FIFA 17 Verdict

Stevenage v Wycombe Wanderers: FIFA 17 Verdict

It could be our increasingly borked right analogue stick. It could be post-work fatigue. But, yet again, we were denied a classic in this week’s outing. But we do have a watertight piece of advice for Darren Sarll. If we *do* go behind, make sure Ben Kennedy is given the ball at the restart. He’ll run through the whole defence and get us back on terms right away. It’s a BoroGuide Guarantee*. Oh, Wycombe hit the woodwork three times too. It made us larf. If only we had Rowan Liburd to come on in the 85th minute and net the winner. Sorrowful Sigh.

* not a guarantee
