D:Ream have a bloody lot to answer for. A generation brought up to think that things can only get better. Yeah, well, when you look back over the last four games and see big fat eggs in both the Goals For and Points columns, you start to wish your next opponents won’t bother turning up. Sadly, we reckon league leaders Northampton Town could be keen on this one…
Stevenage v Northampton Town: No Cobblers
The Cobblers are all but there as far as the league title goes. With a game in hand over Oxford United and a handy 11-point buffer protecting their championship interests, it’s all looking peachy at Sixfields. And the local council may even get to see something for their lent dosh now that workers have once again picked up their tools on the club’s new East Stand.
Our guests this weekend come to our gaff like that annoyingly smug kid at school who’d come around yours with the shiny new toy everyone wants. Northampton haven’t lost a game since the other side of Christmas; on the road, Cambridge were the last to hold ’em off and that was in mid-October. Things can only get better, you say? It sure doesn’t feel like it.
We’re not going to paint this any other way – this fixture is the first half of a double header that we could really do without. You know full well how the form has been for us pretty much since the beginning of this current campaign, so why torture ourselves with a reminder. We’ve forgotten what it feels like to look at the table to see how far we could rise too.
Lately, it’s been a case of asking two questions – how far will we fall and are the teams below us going to close in further?
Dagenham – it appears – aren’t going to be doing any catching. After losing in midweek, the Daggers are nine points from safety and we now have a game in hand. For what it’s worth. Just the one relegation spot up for grabs then, and it is York who lead that race – although Notts County are doing a spectacular job of a late-season implosion on and off the field.
Anyway, back to this game and the jaw-dropping news that we’re 3/1 (Bet 365) to win – a ridiculous vote of no confidence from the bookies for a two-horse race being run on our own turf. You’ll also get 5/2 on the visitors to win to nil, which is a punt well in with the current state of affairs.
Or maybe we’ll flip the world on its head. Maybe we’ll turn that form guide inside out, upside down three times over. And maybe things can only get better. We won’t get the answer to that one until 4.55pm on Saturday evening, and that’s if our referee David Webb doesn’t piss around with the injury time.
Oh, we’ve never won when he’s reffed as it goes… chuffin’ marvellous, right?
