Us Line Is It Anyway: Stevenage v Cambridge United

If it’s true that you’re only as good as your last game, then we must be laughing this weekend. Back on the winning trail after an uplifting result at Hartlepool United midweek, Stevenage are heading back to the Lamex this weekend – though it seems we are dragging something in with us that only a cat would get a kick out of. Yep, it’s Cambridge United and it’s only ‘cos we have to…

Stevenage v Cambridge United: No Love Lost?

To be honest, this ain’t the sort of game we need right now. No, we need more matches against the likes of the Pools – sides who couldn’t put one over on us in a month of Sundays and almost come with a ‘three points or your money back’ guarantee. But we have the U’s instead; an unruly mob unbeaten in four League Two outings and now just two points outside the promotion pack.

Gah!

We’ve won our last four home games against our neighbours and scored 12 goals in the process, but that contrasts against what passes for current form. Away from the Abbey, the U’s have won more games (six) than not (four) – including four out of the last six on their travels. Mind you, we saw this week that all runs can come to an end – maybe this time it’s the turn of our guests?

The overall record between the two sides leans gently in our favour for the time being, with eight wins to Cambridge’s six – and there don’t tend to be dull stalemates when we we meet. For every Cup giantkilling, there’s the brutal realities of the playoffs (Ed – never happened); Scott Laird smashing the bayjeezus out of some snow after Charlie Griffin’s goal and last-gasp woes live on telly.

And what that all means is that you’re probably best forgetting about lumping on the draw. It’s 15/8 (Bet365) for good to triumph over evil, though the U’s are more fancied with the bookies at 8/5. Mark Roberts is 9s (Will Hill) to break plenty of Boro’ hearts at some point during the regulation 90 – though you’d be able to wipe away all those tears with the readies you’ll take home.

Mind you, we’ll probably get a draw after all that…

In conclusion then, hello. We’ll go back to what we said nearer the start – in the grip of a delicate recovery under Sergeant Sarll, we’d have put off the visit of Cambridge for a bit longer. Maybe even indefinitely, but – then again – that’s a personal preference. It is what it is, and what it is needs no excuses. Time to just get it on and carry on up the charts, right?
