We’re Going To Need A Bigger Boat…

It’s touch and go, you can be sure about that – going head to head with a great white shark on its own patch or taking our chances with Wycombe Wanderers indoors. Look, this is League Two and there’s no such thing as an ideal fixture – but the idea of inviting the Chairboys to our gaff for tea and cakes doesn’t go down well. You can bet they probably won’t take their shoes off for a start.

Sid James‘ Park saw a bone fide miracle last weekend: Boro’ scored three goals, took home a point and made up a two-goal deficit. It’s enough for the time being to lift the mood and end the run of so many defeats that we almost had to use a second hand to tally them all up. But the light at the end of the tunnel could well be the delayed 16.53 service to London Kings Cross making up time.

You might ask why we’ve already donned our tin hat and stocked up the shelter. Well, Wycombe have the second best form on the road so far this term and have yet to be sent packing empty handed. Goals haven’t been free-flowing, having said that, with a mere six from five outings, but the defence has been imperious – one goal conceded away from Adams Park so far this campaign.

For those who are wondering, we’re averaging a goal a game at the Lamex but have failed to score in half our six home outings.

Here’s another punch to roll with – our home record against the Bucks lot is rubbish. One draw in three attempts, and that’s when Boro’ were at their strongest under G-Wezzle. Of course, the up shot is that Teddy Sheringham could make a little piece of history if all goes according to plan and we do unto Wycombe what Exeter, Leyton Orient, Morecambe and two others have failed to do.

The Chairboys are leading the running in the eyes of the bookies as you might expect, with 6/5 (Will Hill) best on offer right now. Boro’ can be backed at 13/5, while a second successive stalemate comes in at the same price. Bennedy is 7/2 (StanJames) to keep his scoring run going, while Under 2.5 Goals is a safe bet at 6/7 (Marathon) if Wycombe’s results this term are anything to go by.

If the Exeter game taught us anything, it’s that we’ve still got a lot about us – and that we can score goals. After this weekend is an unappealing double-header of away days to Portsmouth and Northampton respectively, which means it’d be helpful if we can get points on the board here. But it’s Wycombe, it’s a tough defence to crack and it’s a team that seems to like playing at our place…
