This one is huge, isn’t it. No, wait, it’s bigger than that – it’s large. If you’ve got a football history book at home, take it out and throw it in the bin – it’s worthless. The history books will now have to be rewritten. But what will they say? They’ll quite simply say Luton Town spectacularly naffed up their playoff bid while Stevenage honed theirs. Everything else will be a footnote.
At the end of October, the Hatters were sitting top of the table after stringing together seven wins on the bounce – one of which came at our humble abode. Boro’ were dawdling around in 16th, but the transformation has been sublime and now Luton need a full-blown, Jesus-appearing-in-a-slice-of-toast miracle to rescue their season. Not even Del Boy could spin that one out…
Watford are up to the Premier League, MK Dons have a shot of promotion from League One and we may be meeting Wycombe in the League Two playoffs; it’s only Luton letting the 3 Counties side down at the moment. But we suppose it’s still possible – a not-that-unlikely Plymouth defeat at the Shrews coupled with an eight-goal win against us. Yeah, of course it’s still possible…
It’s almost as possible as picking up a 30-point deduction and being relegated instead. But that’d be unprecedented, right?
At home, the Hatters form hasn’t been awe-inspiring – two wins from six, with almost as many goals conceded as scored. But it is rare for them to fire a blank on their own patch, while 11 clean sheets in 22 games is pretty decent. Our away form is average, especially compared to how we do at home. We are unbeaten in seven on our travels, however, and that’s surely no mean feat.
That said, the bookies are siding with a Hatters win here – 5/6 the best price advertised for a home triumph, which means that an away win is probably good value at 14/5 (BetVictor). Nine of our games on the road (and nine of theirs at Kenilworth Road, funnily enough) have seen Under 2.5 Goals (13/14, 888sport), while Andy Drury is 9/2 (Bet365) to spice things up anytime.
We might now be able to focus on who stands between us and Wembley in the playoffs, but you can bet your bottom AND your top dollar that GW won’t be letting the minds wander beyond 16:45 on Saturday. There’s an important job at hand at Luton this weekend and that’s not only to win the game, but to rub the noses of our junior neighbours well and truly in it. G’wan the boys.
