The Crazy Gang

In case you missed it, AFC Wimbledon come this game having played Liverpool for the first time since… well, forever. It was hard to ignore the Beeb indulging in all that “Magic of the Cup” guff, throwing up a confused narrative that pitched the Dons in their first ever encounter against the Reds, all the while looking to repeat the club’s 1988 FA Cup glory.

Let’s be fair – it didn’t even come close to Accrington Stanley’s level of inventing matches that didn’t exist, but it was all a bit muddled to us. It’s not as if this weekend’s clash between us and the Dons is the first historic rematch since Stevenage Town and Wimbledon drew three-apiece back on 15 April 1968. No nostalgic live blog. No BT Sport documentary.

AFC Wimbledon, of course, have the unfortunate distinction of being one of only three teams during the whole of 2014 that couldn’t even bag a point against Boro’ on their home turf. How much of that is down to [Redacted]’s wonder goal on debut can be discussed by historians at length in 40 years from now, but we can argue we’re a different beast now.

Our record against the Dons is a good one. Six times we’ve met and none we’ve lost, unless you want to split hairs about the Paint Pot tie back in October 2011. And our meetings tend to serve up goals like an All-You-Can-Eat buffet at the local curry house – there have been 18 in the last five games, with Boro’ scoring at least twice in each of those.

Now, you must’ve been paying attention recently and know how our form is shaping up right now. Three clean sheets in the last four; three wins and a draw too. Look at the table and you’ll find that, two points behind us, are the Dons and there they are with exactly the same Goals For and Against as us. Like Morecambe last week, little separates us.

The Dons have a handy record on the road, with the eighth best record in the division right now. But that’s not saying they’re formidable – they’ve won as many as they’ve lost (four). And they’ve taken just one less point from the last six than us – it’ll be a close one this weekend, don’t you worry. Or do worry? We can’t be your mother on this one…

After stepping on the PS3 controller, FIFA 15 is out the window this week. Not literally, of course. The bookies are who we’ve turned to in our hour of need. The best price on a home win is 7/5 (SkyBet) and you’ll get evens on just one team scoring in this one. Dannie Bulman (10/1) and Barry Fuller (16/1) are anytime goalscorers that bloody would ‘n all.

A win could take us seventh. A defeat could drop us down to 13th. And forever twirling, twirling…
