A Grand Old Look At York

Del Boy and Trigger at the bar

The grand old duke of York, right, had 10,000 men. And he marched them up to the top of a hill, before deciding to send them back down again. And there was some more mucking around before they were neither up nor down. Now we’re no military tactician, but this seems like a huge waste of everyone’s time and effort.

What we hope isn’t going to be a waste of everyone’s time and effort is our trip north to York this weekend for what we’ve got down as Track 26 on Now That’s What I Call League Two 2014-5. And our first impressions are good – a resurgent Boro’ rocking up at the home of the side with the 23rd best home record in the league.

Yep, York City might be relatively comfortable in 19th and have a fairly respectable goal difference of minus three, but they have just one win to their name on their own turf. Even Hartlepool United in their race to the GM Vauxhall Conference have won more at their own gaff than the Minstermen. We think we’re on a winner ‘ere Trig

We’re all in favour of unbeaten runs here and we’d not be too miffed if we made it eight on the trot at Bootham Crescent. But it’s worth remembering that we’ve already surrendered three points to our hosts this weekend, somehow losing 3-2 in the reverse fixture earlier this term. York’ll no doubt fancy a double over us, but we’re out for revenge.

One grumble we have is that, by losing to ’em back in September, we borked what had been a decent stretch of form when the Minstermen were involved. They hadn’t come out on top for eight straight games; at their place, you have to go back to October 2004 for our only defeat. If the stars aren’t still aligning in our favour here, we’re Russell Grant.

If we look into the giant crystal ball that bookmakers swear by, what do we see? Well, we see a very tasty 12/5 on a Boro’ win with SkyBet and 4/6 in a couple of places for Under 2.5 Goals. That’s because 75 per cent of York home games don’t see three goals. You’ll find Tom Pett priced at 11/2 if you think he’ll find the back of the net in this one…

Now there’s nothing left but to go make boats do circles in the river.
